Keri Bergere and her cycling companions, Annie Bilotta, Tisch Williams, and two others, embarked on what was supposed to be a peaceful long-distance bike ride through the scenic trails near Fall City, Washington. However, their adventure took a dramatic turn when they encountered two mountain lions on the Tokul Creek trail, approximately 30 kilometers into their journey. Within moments, one of the cougars pounced, pulling Bergere from her bike in a swift and terrifying attack.
The Battle for Survival
Faced with a life-threatening situation, the group’s response was nothing short of heroic. Armed with nothing but sticks, rocks, and sheer willpower, the women engaged the cougar in a desperate struggle to free their friend. Their efforts were coordinated and fierce, with one attempting to physically restrain the animal in a battle that tested the limits of their strength and courage. The encounter, which lasted around 15 minutes, ended when the cougar momentarily loosened its grip, allowing the women to extract Bergere and use a bike to pin the animal down until help arrived.
Recovery and Reflection
Following the attack, Bergere was hospitalized for five days, facing a challenging recovery due to permanent nerve damage. Despite the physical and emotional scars left by the incident, the cyclists' spirit remains unbroken. They vow to return to the trails, this time prepared with measures for cougar encounters. This harrowing experience underscores the unpredictability of nature and the importance of being prepared for any scenario.
